CHS Choir opens this week’s School Board Meeting

CHS Choir opens this week’s School Board Meeting

It was a joyous occasion at the Citrus County School District School Board meeting this Tuesday, as the talented choir from Citrus High School took to the stage to spread some holiday cheer. Led by the capable and dedicated director John Edel, the choir’s beautiful voices filled the room with the sounds of Christmas.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to John Edel and the entire choir for their wonderful performance. They truly brought the holiday spirit to the school board meeting and helped to kick off the festive season in style. We wish them all the best for the rest of the holiday season, and hope that they have a wonderful time with their families and friends.

Stars shined bright at the Galaxy of the Stars

Stars shined bright at the Galaxy of the Stars

What a wonderful evening last night at the Galaxy of the Stars Teacher of the Year and School-Related Employee of the Year celebration.

I was grateful to again offer the invocation to open the event to honor these amazing people.

Congratulations to all the evening’s STARs, special congratulations to Lita Stanton from Citrus High School for being named our 2024 Teacher of the Year and Angelica Lefevers from Lecanto Primary School our 2023 School-Related Employee of the Year.

Special shout out to event announcers (and comedians) Dr. Scott Hebert and Amy Crowell. You again did an outstanding job!

Thank you to our Citrus County Education Foundation, its leader Shaunda Burdette, staff, directors, and the many tireless volunteers, for the awesome work making the event happen and for all the special gifts for all our honorees.  We are so blessed to have the greatest education foundation (CCEF) in the world. Lastly, a very special thanks to Amy Barbieri and her team for the stunning event theme, decoration, and beauty. Ms. Barbieri once again outdid herself for our honorees.

77th Annual Joint Conference a huge success

77th Annual Joint Conference a huge success

Citrus County Schools’ students take center stage

The 77th Annual Joint Conference is complete, and I walk away as Florida School Board Association President with optimism and excitement for the work ahead in education in Florida for students, families, teachers, staff, schools, and communities. This is arguably the largest joint conference of education leaders and local education policymakers. This event included no less than six different education associations including the lead association of FSBA, with FADSS, FELL, FERMA, FSBAA, and SUNSPRA playing strong roles.  For five days we represented Citrus County and the State of Florida to the nearly 500 school board members, superintendents, and school leaders from throughout Florida. We welcomed 84 of the 92 new school board members to our new school board member academy. It was such an honor and pleasure to meet these new representatives as they learned of the work ahead of them.

The most special personal moment for me as president was being able to select and bring students from our own Citrus County.  Crystal River High School Naval JROTC set a distinguished beginning with the Opening General Session when their Color Guard marched into a full-capacity audience who rose in silent respect to the great flags of our United States and the State of Florida. Upon reaching the main stage Citrus High School junior Hailey Kell sang our National Anthem. As she finished, we heard CRHS junior NJROTC Color Guard Cadet Chief Petty Officer William Wallace lead out the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The audience joined in and it gave me goosebumps to hear one of the loudest, most awe-inspiring pledges I have ever heard. Once the Pledge ended I took the podium to introduce to the State of Florida our own Citrus High School’s talented ensemble Breez’. These young singers performed three songs and from the moment they started to sing, the entire audience was engaged due to the awesome talent of these young people. However, it was their third song that captured and set the tone for the entire week when Breez’ sang the song “We’re All in This Together”. By the end of the song the entire audience of over 500 were on their feet swaying and singing the chorus “we are all in this together” in unison!  Right in the front center of the audience were our Superintendent Himmel, Chief Officer Dr. Scott Hebert, and our entire School Board standing as tall and proud as could be as they led the audience. It’s likely no surprise to many of you to learn that I begin to choke up with tears running down my face. What could be more inspirational than students leading and reminding all of us the goal of our week: to become better school board members and to continue to keep our focus on students. There were some very powerful moments throughout the week including having Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., speak to the entire audience, as well as listening to presentations from other legislators, state education leaders, nationally known authors, and even our own Citrus County Schools Assitant Superitnent Jonny Bishop, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Scott Hebert, and Rick Manager Steven Baumer. However, none had the profound impact as our students from Citrus County.  Throughout the week, anyone that saw me stopped to tell me what an impact those students had on them and to thank me for bringing them to open the main assembly. Thank you to CRHS NJROTC Warrant Officer Elizabeth Rivera, CHS Breez’ Director John Edel, and everyone that traveled to support our students to be there, but most especially thank you to Shaunda Burdette and the Citrus County Educational Foundation, along with their amazing community partners, who sponsored the students traveling to represent at this event.

There is so much that has been happening in the world of politics and in public education over the last number of years, but I walk away from this week proud that I represent one of the greatest counties in this great State and Nation, and while we have still much work ahead of us, “we’re all in this together“ and I am grateful for the small role I get to play, and I thank you all for your continued support of our students!

God bless our students, God bless Citrus County and God bless our State of Florida and our Nation.

Kennedy takes the oath of office for the next four years

Kennedy takes the oath of office for the next four years

Today I was so humbled and honored to have my family and friends with me as I took the oath of office to continue to serve as a Citrus County School Board Member. I once again used the Bible my grandmother Ada Kenaston gave me as a child for my wife to hold and me to place my hand on as I took the oath. Today was extra special as I was joined by my mother and both of our children who traveled to join me today and stand with me. Our family is so blessed by Citrus County, and I am so grateful to serve this great County, State, and Nation. Please continue to lift our students, families, staff, schools, district, my family, and me in your prayers. God Bless you all.

LifeSouth Community Foundation BOD meeting

LifeSouth Community Foundation BOD meeting

Last year our high school blood donors saved 64,500 lives.

Yesterday I traveled to Gainesville to attend the LifeSouth Community Foundation board of directors meeting. I am honored to serve on this Foundation Board which was created in 2011 to raise awareness about the need for blood donation in the communities LifeSouth Community Blood Centers serves.

My family are blood donators (thanks to my wife) and have been for over 30 years.  Last year LifeSouth collected more than 290,000 donors and provided more than 406,000 blood components to LifeSouth hospitals. This resulted in saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

I am also so proud of the work of our student donators do saving lives. Last year our high school blood donors saved 64,500 lives.

One of the areas of focus of the LifeSouth Foundation is its educational opportunities for schools and students. From High School Student Scholarships, School Grant Programs, HOSA Partnerships and Donations, classroom presentations, and much more.

What I am most excited about is a new LifeSouth Internship Program which is getting ready to be piloted locally. Senior high school students will have the opportunity to become a volunteer interns with LifeSouth, giving students the opportunity to work alongside LifeSouth employees learning the skills of phlebotomy. LifeSouth trainers will provide an education-based program designed to the student’s learning plan including online and hands-on training. Once students successfully complete the program and “graduate,” they may be offered a full-time donor services position with LifeSouth.  We will be sharing more details about eligibility and how to apply for this amazing opportunity in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

If you are a blood donator now, thank you for saving lives- If you would like to become a donator please come by any LifeSouth bus or center today!

NJROTC at NAS JAX Air Show

NJROTC at NAS JAX Air Show

The Crystal River High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) unit traveled today to the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville to attend the NAS Jax Air Show. The NJROTC cadets got to get up close with the Legendary Blue Angels. NAS Jax Air is the birthplace of the Blue Angels. These Cadets witnessed thrills like never before from a variety of military and civilian demonstrations. But the grand finale was the Navy’s Blue Angels.

Thank you to Warrant Liz Rivera and all for making these outstanding opportunities possible! God Bless America!!
