On July 4th, we gather in our great country, state, and county to commemorate and celebrate Independence Day. Living here with my family fills me with deep gratitude for our freedom, earned through the courage of our Founding Fathers and the sacrifices of many.

We honor the Founders who boldly declared independence, shaping a nation on principles of liberty, justice, and equality. Their unwavering spirit continues to inspire us.

This day is also a tribute to those who have selflessly sacrificed for our freedom. From past warriors to present-day servicemen and women, we owe them immense gratitude.

As we come together with our community, friends, and family, we embrace the diversity that enriches us. With hearts filled with appreciation, we pay homage to those who have secured our precious gift of freedom.

On this occasion, we create cherished memories, honoring the past and embracing the future. Through picnics, parades, and fireworks, we engage with gratitude.

I am grateful for the privilege of living in Citrus County, Florida—a place that exemplifies the values our Founding Fathers fought for.

Rieck on being chosen as the Rick Davison Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to Justin Rieck, a rising senior at Crystal River High School and a member of the Class of 2024, as well as his fellow delegates from Citrus County, on their outstanding accomplishments at the 79th session of the Florida American Legion Boys State! This remarkable group of young men returned last week from an eventful week filled with learning, growth, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Accompanied by other Boys State delegates from Citrus County, Justin ventured to Tallahassee, joining approximately 430 juniors from across Florida in this prestigious program. Throughout the week, these delegates actively engaged in legislative sessions, participating in discussions on important issues and gaining firsthand experience in the political process. Campaigning, elections, and court proceedings provided them with a unique insight into the dynamics of leadership and decision-making.

Among the impressive group of 430 delegates, only ten were selected for scholarship interviews, and we are thrilled to congratulate Justin Rieck on being chosen as the Rick Davison Scholarship Recipient. This distinction is a testament to his exceptional qualities, dedication, and hard work, which clearly impressed the scholarship committee.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the boys from Citrus County who attended Boys State. Each of them deserves recognition for their individual accomplishments and contributions to this prestigious event. Their participation exemplifies their commitment to personal growth and civic engagement, and we are proud to have such outstanding representatives from our community.

We express our deepest gratitude to the American Legion Post 155 Crystal River, Florida, for their sponsorship, which made it possible for these young men to attend Boys State. Their unwavering support and dedication to fostering leadership among our youth are truly commendable. Such opportunities create a platform for talented individuals like Justin and his peers to explore their potential and make a positive impact on society.

Furthermore, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Commissioner Davison for his generosity in establishing the Rick Davison Scholarship. His support not only aids in fulfilling the educational aspirations of these young men but also demonstrates his belief in their potential to shape a brighter future.

Citrus County Safety Patrol students and families, we extend our warmest wishes for a fantastic safety patrol trip to Washington DC! As they embark on this journey, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, our community sponsors, and most importantly, our dedicated teacher sponsors and chaperones. Having personally experienced this trip as a parent twice before, I can attest to its positive impact on everyone involved. It’s an incredible opportunity for our students to broaden their horizons and create lasting memories. A Solemn and Special Memorial Day Ceremony at the Old Homosassa Veterans Memorial

This Memorial weekend, the Old Homosassa Veterans Memorial in Homosassa, Florida, hosted a truly solemn and special ceremony to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. The event brought together esteemed guests who delivered heartfelt speeches, fostering a strong sense of community.

U.S. Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis, representing Florida’s District 12, delivered a moving address that expressed gratitude and reverence for the fallen heroes. His words deeply resonated with the attendees, reminding everyone of the selfless acts of valor that safeguarded the nation’s freedom. The honorable Commissioner Diana Finegan from the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners, District 2, also spoke at the Memorial Day event. Her presence underscored the significance of commemorating and preserving the memory of those who gave their lives in service to their country.

Commander Richard Hunt from the Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 Military Order of the Purple Heart served as the event’s Master of Ceremonies. His heartfelt words exemplified his dedication to honoring veterans and their sacrifices, ensuring the solemnity of the occasion was upheld. Jeremy Fowler, who generously devoted his time, resources, and funding, deserves sincere appreciation for beautifying the memorial. His efforts have created a space that not only honors the fallen but also provides solace and reflection for visitors.

Five Citrus High School ladies from the CHS Chorus, along with their director John Edel, deserve heartfelt thanks for providing some special music selections during the ceremony. Their beautiful performances added a poignant and emotional dimension to the event, enhancing the atmosphere of remembrance and paying tribute to the fallen heroes.

Darrick Buettner, the Citrus Schools Director of Special Programs, deserves recognition for his invaluable work in coordinating and overseeing the event. His commitment to organizing a meaningful ceremony that honored the fallen and fostered a sense of unity within the community was commendable.

This Memorial Day ceremony exemplified the gratitude and respect owed to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. With the contributions of Congressman Bilirakis, Commissioner Finegan, Commander Hunt, Jeremy Fowler, and Darrick Buettner, the event provided a poignant reminder of the importance of continually honoring our fallen heroes and supporting those who have served. Their unwavering dedication and selflessness inspire us all to cherish and safeguard the freedoms we hold dear.

My wife Thomasine devoted over thirty years to teaching middle and high school reading. Every Memorial Day, she would guide her students through a special lesson centered around the poignant poem, “In Flanders Fields.” As they read the verses, Thomasine explained the significance of the poppies, which symbolize sacrifice and remembrance. The impact of this lesson was profound, bringing tears to the eyes of both Thomasine and her students. It served as a reminder that freedom comes at a price.

Today, we express gratitude to all those who made sacrifices, ensuring that my family, children, and community can live in freedom.
