Blessings in a Backpack (video)

Imagine you are sitting in your classroom on Monday morning struggling to make sense out of your teachers’ instructions.  Try as you will, all you feel is your stomachs hunger pangs! You try hard to concentrate, but you feel tired and lethargic.  Still your stomach aches, and now your head hurts as you look at the clock and wonder when it will be time to eat!

Everyday in Citrus County children arrive to school with empty stomachs, trying to learn without the benefit of proper nourishment.

The Blessings in a Backpack program has stepped in to help support school children, who by no fault of their own, simply do not have enough to eat on the weekends.  These children come from ‘food insecure’ families that are unable to satisfy weekend needs.

Citrus Springs Elementary School 25^th Anniversary Celebration

Citrus Springs Elementary School on Thursday, March 20^th, 2011 , celebrated their 25^th Anniversary since opening in 1986 (see video below).  All the past principals were present. At the celebration the school, along with the help of Lecanto High School cheerleaders, revealed the new CSES mascot, “The HAWK”! The Hawk was a great choice as it combines the spirit of the previous mascot and complements the middle school’s Falcon mascot. In addition , the CSE announced it would be bringing back the school’s colors and motto: “Kids Zone – Enter with Care & Love“.

At the celebration a new “Wall of Principals” was unveiled. Complete with pictures of all the principal past and present.  After the celebration the school provided a wonderful potluck lunch for its guests. It was a wonderful day. GO HAWKS!!!

School Board Review for March 8^th, 2011 Meeting

At the March 8^th, 2011 , regular school board meeting Geoffrey Greene, Citrus County Property Appraiser , presented a Special Budget Workshop to the school board on the current property value trends for the nation, our state, and Citrus county.

BRPH presented an updated overview of the Crystal River High School Phase II design documents. This next phase will include the development of the freshmen academy, new media center (library), business school, parent & bus pickup/drop-off, cafeteria renovation and more. It will also tie the current new construction phase of science labs, classrooms and administrative buildings to the campus.

Carol Mainor, Director of Elementary Education , gave an excellent presentation of the new K-5^th grade writing curriculum for Citrus Schools. This new curriculum provides district wide schedule pacing charts, terminology, strategies and lessons that correlate back to the Sunshine State Standards.

Mark Klauder, Director of Secondary Education gave an overview presentation for board and asked for approval of the new 2010-2011 Science textbook adoption for K-12^th grades. Mr. Klauder shared how the text books being purchased often in many cases come with a multi-media and/or internet component so that students and families have access to these additional resources via a personal computer, laptop, iPhone, iPad or tablet devices .

Our next meeting is a School Board Workshop on March 29^th, 2011.
