The following is an important message from Superintendent Sandra “Sam” Himmel:

My staff received information about a Snapchat photo circulating on social media Wednesday night of an unidentified person holding a weapon with the caption “Don’t go to school tomorrow. CSMS be careful.” We are working with the Sheriff’s office to identify the individuals responsible for the post. The Citrus County School system investigates all threats and if the individuals responsible are students, they will be held accountable under the student code of conduct as well as possible criminal charges as determined by the Citrus County Sheriff’s office. There is an increased security presence at Citrus Springs Middle School today. I encourage parents to have conversations with your students regarding the seriousness of this type of behavior. Students should never repost photos of this nature and should always contact school personnel or the Sheriff’s office.

BOCC joins CCSB in support of SRO agreement

BOCC joins CCSB in support of SRO agreement

Today, Tuesday, August 7, 2018, the Citrus County Board of County Commission approved the School Resource Officer (SRO) agreement with the School Board and the Sheriff on a vote of 4-1.  This is the identical agreement that the School Board passed unanimously yesterday, Monday, August 6, 2018.

I want to personally thank Commissioner Kinnard, Commissioner Carnahan, Vice-Chairman Coleman, and Chairman Kitchen for the handling, comments, and votes today.

We pray this matter will soon come to conclusion.  The School Board and Superintendent have made it clear that regardless of what happens with this agreement, we will have law enforcement officers on our campuses when students return on Monday, August 13, 2018.

Film: LISTEN

LISTEN…

“Listen reveals a dangerous disconnect – some of us are afraid of the emotional weight of the film while it makes others feel less alone.”

Today as part of the welcome back to teachers activities, Superintendent Himmel and her staff shared with all our teachers in Citrus Schools, the timely, powerful and moving film, ‘LISTEN’, about how the simple action of listening (or not), can alter a life. It’s about all of us and how we impact each other.

In June, I shared that I too had the great pleasure to watch this film and meet the filmmaker and director, Erahm Christopher at the Florida School Board Association’s June 2018 Conference and trainings.  Christopher shared with school board members, “You might wonder why a filmmaker is at a school board event? Because there is a connection”.  Christopher went on to say that he created this film so that people will have conversations.

The film takes place following a school tragedy in a nearby city.  The story provides a candid look into a group of youths and adults. The film was inspired by real youth trying to be heard, the film illustrates the essential role adults play in the lives of our youth and the fabric of our communities and schools.

I applaud Superintendent Himmel and the education services team for sharing this film with our teachers.  This is not a feel-good film, it is a film that facilitates needed and necessary conversations among adults, adults that are daily impacting young people and their worlds.

If you have an opportunity to see this film, I encourage you to watch it, and share about it.  As the filmmaker intended it will help assist in important conversations and may help us to better LISTEN to one another.
