Dyslexia Awareness Month: Empowering Individuals and Overcoming Challenges

Dyslexia Awareness Month: Empowering Individuals and Overcoming Challenges

As we celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Month in October, it’s essential to reflect on the challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia and the critical role of raising awareness and support. As a school board member personally acquainted with the challenges of dyslexia, I understand the vital importance of promoting understanding and providing the necessary resources for dyslexic individuals to succeed academically and personally. Dyslexia presents unique hurdles, but with the right resources, educators, and technologies, individuals with dyslexia can achieve their full potential.

The Challenges of Dyslexia

As someone with dyslexia, I’ve experienced firsthand the hurdles this condition presents. Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects an individual’s ability to read, write, and spell. It can also impact other areas of learning, making academic success a constant struggle. Dyslexic individuals often face difficulties with phonological processing, which hinders their ability to decode words and recognize familiar words quickly, subsequently affecting reading fluency and comprehension.

Dyslexics may struggle with spelling, recalling words, and organizing their thoughts in writing. These challenges can lead to frustration, low self-esteem, and anxiety, as students often compare their performance to their peers. It’s important to remember that dyslexia is not a measure of intelligence; it’s a difference in how the brain processes information.

The Achievers with Dyslexia

Dyslexia Awareness Month provides a platform to honor the exceptional achievements of individuals who have triumphed over dyslexia or harnessed its unique strengths. Iconic figures such as Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Steven Spielberg, believed to have experienced dyslexia, demonstrate that this condition should not hinder success. In the realm of business, Sir Richard Branson, the Virgin Group founder, and Charles Schwab, the American investor and philanthropist, exemplify dyslexic individuals who have attained remarkable success. In the field of science, Sir Isaac Newton, the pioneering mathematician, physicist, and astronomer, and Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, underscore that dyslexia need not constrain one’s potential for greatness. Moreover, within government and advocacy, Winston Churchill, the celebrated British statesman, and Pete Conrad, the dyslexic astronaut who overcame challenges to explore space as the third person to walk on the moon, contribute to the inspiring legacy of dyslexic individuals who have excelled in their respective fields. These individuals serve as powerful role models, emphasizing the importance of embracing diversity and recognizing the potential within everyone.

Gratitude for Teachers

As an individual with dyslexia, my heartfelt gratitude goes out to the dedicated educators who played a pivotal role in my achievements. Two teachers, in particular, hold a special place in my heart: my seventh-grade teacher, Bill Linthwaite, and my high school English Language Arts (ELA) instructor, Joelle Andrea. Their influence on my life has been profound, and they continue to be a significant part of my journey. Their unwavering patience and support empowered me to believe in my capabilities, fostering my academic excellence. Both of them encouraged me to surpass my limits and equipped me with the indispensable tools required for success in higher education. Even today, our bond remains strong, and I am forever grateful for their enduring guidance.

The Support of My Wife

My wife, Thomasine, who has been an ELA teacher for over 30 years, has played an equally significant role in my life. Her understanding of dyslexia and her extensive experience in teaching students with various learning differences have been invaluable. Thomasine’s unwavering support, insight, and dedication to helping students succeed are a testament to her love for education and her impact on countless lives.

The Role of Technology

Over the years, technology has emerged as a crucial ally for individuals with dyslexia. It has revolutionized the way dyslexic individuals learn, communicate, and achieve their goals. From talking dictionaries, text-to-voice and voice-to-text software, colorized screens, spelling and grammar aides, to the integration of artificial intelligence, technology has drastically improved the learning experience for those with dyslexia.

Assistive technology has expanded our ability to communicate effectively and achieve what was once nearly impossible. These tools empower individuals with dyslexia and other Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) to succeed in mainstream educational settings.

Continuing the Advocacy

While progress has been made in raising dyslexia awareness and providing support, there is still work to be done. State legislatures have made strides in offering specific learning tools to assist individuals diagnosed with dyslexia, but challenges persist in standardized assessments that do not adequately measure the mastery of learning and skills for dyslexics and other SLDs.

To address this, we must expand alternative assessment options and opportunities. Individual student portfolios should be considered to demonstrate mastery of educational standards. A “Good Cause” promotion and high school graduation should be attainable through various pathways that accommodate the unique needs of students with dyslexia.

Resources for Dyslexia Awareness:

During Dyslexia Awareness Month, it’s crucial not only to celebrate achievements but also to recognize the incredible potential and talent within each individual with dyslexia. By working together, school board members, educators, and technology developers, we can create a more inclusive and supportive educational system that empowers dyslexic individuals to achieve their dreams. My own journey as a person with dyslexia I hope is a testament to the power of dedicated teachers, the support of loved ones, and the incredible impact of technology on the lives of individuals with dyslexia. While we have come far, there is still work ahead to ensure that no one’s potential goes untapped due to dyslexia or any other learning difference.

Empowering the Future of Healthcare: The HCA Expo 2023

Empowering the Future of Healthcare: The HCA Expo 2023

The second annual HCA Expo for high school juniors and seniors took place today, a momentous occasion that brought together nearly 50 enthusiastic students from local high schools. It was an unforgettable day at Citrus Hospital, where the promise of the healthcare sector unfolded before their eyes. In their unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing healthcare workforce shortage, HCA Florida Healthcare and Citrus Hospital provided these aspiring students with invaluable early exposure, training, and economic prospects.

At the forefront of this transformative initiative stands Sriya Chandrupatla, a senior in Lecanto High School’s International Baccalaureate program and the President of LHS HOSA. Her inspiration ignited a fervor among many students, setting the stage for an event that aimed to introduce young minds to the captivating and diverse opportunities within the healthcare industry.

The day unfolded with an immersive, behind-the-scenes tour of Citrus Hospital, offering the students a comprehensive look at various medical realms, from the operating room and cardiac catheterization lab to emergency services, rehab, diagnostic imaging, and plant operations. Beyond these conventional domains, the students also delved into essential departments and facility services.

A standout moment of the day came when the students ventured to the hospital’s helipad, where they engaged with the Bayflite helicopter and Medflight team. This experience shed light on their crucial role in providing medical transport services to the community, leaving an indelible mark on the students. They gained firsthand insights into the equipment and learned about the work of the flight crew, igniting their passion for the field of medical transport.

Throughout the day, the students were immersed in hands-on learning experiences that equipped them with a wealth of knowledge about the healthcare industry, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers. Lisa Nummi, the Chief Executive Officer of HCA Florida Citrus Hospital, expressed her delight at witnessing the students’ exposure to the healthcare industry, inspiring them to consider careers in this vital field. She firmly believes that such exposure will substantially contribute to the development of a well-educated and highly-skilled healthcare workforce in their community.

As a school board member dedicated to supporting Career and Technical Education opportunities, attending events like this fills me with immense pride. The hope is that the hands-on learning experiences provided during HCA Expo 2023 will empower students to make informed decisions about their future careers and, ultimately, make a meaningful impact on the development of a highly-skilled healthcare workforce in the community.

We extend our deepest appreciation to those who made this event possible, including Shaunda Burdette and the Citrus County Education Foundation, Vandana Chandrupatla, CCSB Director of Career & Technical and Adult Education Debra Stanley, Director of Special Academic Programs Darrick Buetter, CCSB PIO Lindsay Blair, Citrus Hospital Communication Director Katie Myers, LHS sponsor Ryan Campbell, CHS sponsor Britney Peterson, and CRHS sponsors Danielle Doherty-Koch & Anneliese Leazot, Citrus County Schools, Citrus Hospital CEO Lisa Nummi, and HCA Florida Healthcare Citrus Hospital. Without their unwavering support and dedication, this educational opportunity for aspiring healthcare professionals would not have come to fruition. We eagerly anticipate witnessing these students evolve into future leaders in the healthcare industry, all thanks to the visionary initiative of Sriya Chandrupatla.

Empowering Education: A Week of Leadership and Collaboration with FSBA

FSBA Leadership Team Gathers for Strategic Planning and Professional Development

This week, I had the honor of representing the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) as the Immediate Past President in Gainesville, Florida. Serving in the capacity of an FSBA Executive Director, I participated in a series of pivotal events that included FSBA Executive Board Meetings, Board of Director Meetings, and the Board of Director Strategic Planning and Professional Development sessions. These gatherings were meticulously designed to focus on strategic planning, collaboration, and professional development, all with the aim of advancing public education in the state of Florida.

The annual FSBA gathering brought together a distinguished assembly comprising FSBA’s Board of Directors, committee chairs, and committee vice-chairs. This gathering, regarded as a cornerstone event for the association, provided a crucial opportunity for education leaders from across the state to convene, exchange insights, and chart a course for the future. As the preeminent advocate for public education in Florida, FSBA maintains an unwavering commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of its leaders. This commitment was evident in the dynamic agenda, which encompassed committee planning sessions, a collaborative workshop, and a standout session featuring the renowned and retired University of Florida Soccer Coach, Becky Burleigh, who led an enlightening workshop titled “Fierce Conversations: Managing Conflict.”

Andrea Messina, the Chief Executive Officer of FSBA, reflected on the event, stating, “Throughout the two-day gathering, we engaged in productive discussions, shared best practices, and explored innovative approaches to addressing the evolving needs of Florida’s students. FSBA looks forward to building upon the insights gained during this event and continuing to work collaboratively with local communities, policymakers, and stakeholders to improve student achievement for all students in Florida.”

On a notable Friday, FSBA convened its quarterly Board of Directors meeting at the esteemed Florida High School Athletic Association, where I also serve as a School Board Member on the Area 2 Sectional Appeals. This day was particularly special as it provided an opportunity to interact with FHSAA Executive Director Craig Demon. Our professional collaboration spans several years, and I hold Mr. Demon in the highest regard. His presence at our Board of Directors meeting allowed for a discussion of pivotal issues such as student transfer policies and cleared up misconceptions surrounding FHSAA and high school NIL (name, image, and likeness) matters.

Also, during the FSBA Board of Directors meeting, the unveiling of the FSBA 2022-2023 Annual Report was a noteworthy moment, orchestrated by FSBA CEO Ms. Messina. Within this comprehensive report, my President’s Address to FSBA took center stage, showcasing key highlights from the past year. It served as a testament to our collective dedication to advancing education and fostering positive change within our community.

I remain deeply grateful for the opportunities afforded by these gatherings. They serve as a lens through which I gain a profound insight into the needs of our Citrus County Schools, our students, their families, and the dedicated educators who shape their futures. Moreover, these engagements offer a unique opportunity to discover the innovative approaches adopted by other school boards, fostering a spirit of mutual support and shared experiences that ultimately benefit all.

At its core, the mission of FSBA is a noble one: to elevate student achievement through the development of effective school board leadership and unwavering advocacy for public education. This mission stands as a beacon, guiding our efforts as we continue to serve and uplift the future of Florida’s students, ensuring they have access to the best education possible.

Honoring a Legend: Coach Archie W. Dabney Inducted into the FHSAA Hall of Fame

Honoring a Legend: Coach Archie W. Dabney Inducted into the FHSAA Hall of Fame

On Sunday, September 24, 2023, Gainesville, Florida, became the backdrop for a truly remarkable occasion. It was the 33rd induction class of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Hall of Fame, an event that celebrated over 102 years of interscholastic competition in the state of Florida. This year was particularly special as it marked the 55th anniversary of the merger between the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association (FIAA) and the FHSAA, with a renewed focus on honoring those associated with the FIAA from 1932 to 1968.

Among the illustrious inductees of the FHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2023, one name shone brightly: Archie W. Dabney, a beloved figure from Citrus County. FHSAA Executive Director Craig Damon emphasized the significance of this year’s class, stating, “This year’s class includes trailblazers from the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association which merged with the FHSAA in 1968. It is with great pleasure we introduce them as the FHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2023.”One of the standout inductees, and a source of immense pride for Citrus County, was the legendary “Coach” Archie W. Dabney. Coach Dabney, who passed away on May 21, 2023, at the age of 95, left an indelible mark on the world of Florida high school athletics. His illustrious career, which spanned approximately four decades, was characterized by unwavering dedication as both a coach and an educator.

In 1955, Dabney embarked on his coaching journey at Booker T. Washington High School, which today stands as Inverness Middle School. Here, he took on the roles of coach in football, baseball, basketball, and track. Under his inspirational leadership, the Booker T. Washington “Hornets” soared to unprecedented heights, clinching state championships in football, basketball, and both boys’ and girls’ track. What sets Coach Dabney apart is the remarkable fact that he secured a state title in each of these sports and amassed an astonishing nine district titles in basketball during his tenure.

When schools were integrated in the late 1960s, Coach Dabney transitioned to Crystal River High School, in the 1967-1968 school year. During his tenure at Crystal River High, spanning from 1968 to 1984, Dabney continued his role as a multi-sport mentor, overseeing football, basketball, track, and even tennis. Beyond his coaching duties, he imparted knowledge as a dedicated science teacher and later offered guidance and support as a trusted counselor.

In 1978, Coach Dabney made the difficult decision to retire from coaching, shifting his focus to a full-time role as a guidance counselor. His farewell ceremony was a poignant moment, where one of his students, Paul Lyons, a senior basketball player, paid a heartfelt tribute, saying of Coach Dabney, “He kept us together and taught us so much more than how to play the game of basketball.”

Archie W. Dabney’s induction into the FHSAA Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy. It honors his unwavering commitment to the development of young athletes, his exemplary coaching prowess, and his profound influence as an educator and mentor. His impact on Citrus County and the countless lives he touched serves as a testament to the power of dedication, compassion, and leadership.

As the FHSAA commemorates its 55th anniversary, it also commemorates a true Florida sports legend. Coach Archie W. Dabney’s story is one of inspiration, resilience, and enduring impact. His induction into the FHSAA Hall of Fame not only recognizes his remarkable achievements but also ensures that his legacy continues to inspire generations of student-athletes, coaches, and educators for years to come.
