Without question, reading is the most important skill for students in the 21st century. But what will convince students that reading is rewarding and wonderful? Lecanto High School and the Citrus County Library System have teamed up to offer one solution — Reading Buddies.
Reading Buddies began 10 years ago through the collaborative efforts of Cindy Shear, an LHS English teacher, and Sherry Durham, the youth librarian at Central Ridge Library. A few years later, another teacher from Lecanto, Scottie Spry, joined the effort. The idea for Reading Buddies began after Shear’s class read Ray Bradbury’s novel “Fahrenheit 451.” Inspired by this book, her students wanted to make others aware of the vital necessity of books. Thus began an odyssey.
