Young Citrus County scientists show off their experiments, findings to judges
By Cheri Harris
Brenna Towne has a friend who is allergic to red food dye. She wondered which colors of M&M candies contain it. This question was the basis of the Central Ridge Elementary School student’s science project.
Towne’s project was among more than 300 projects selected for judging in the Citrus County Regional Science Fair on Wednesday at Citrus County Auditorium in Inverness.
The fifth-grader said she had hypothesized that red, orange, blue and green M&M’s contained red dye. After soaking candies on a paper plate, transferring samples of the candy coatings to a paper coffee filter and soaking them in a saltwater solution to separate the dyes, she concluded that only brown, red and orange M&M’s contained the red dye.
