1878 Rules for Teachers

- Teachers are expected to keep the school clean and neat by: sweeping the
floor at least once a day, starting the fire at 7A.M., so that the school room
will be warm by 8 AM.
- Teachers will not dress in bright colors.
- Dresses must not be more than two inches above the ankle.
- At least two petticoats must be worn and they will be dried on pillowcases.
- A teacher will not marry or keep company with men during the term of her employment.
- Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
- After ten hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
- Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.
- Every teacher should lay aside from each payday a goodly sum of his earning for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society.
- Teachers are expected to be home between the hours of 8 PM and 6AM, unless in attendance at a school function.
- It is understood that the teacher will attend church each Sunday and either teach a class in Sunday School or sing in the choir.
- A teacher will not get into a carriage with any man except her brother or father.
- Teachers will not loiter at ice cream stores.
- Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, integrity, intention, and honesty.
- The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay providing the Board of Education approves.
- The teacher will not leave town at any time without permission of the
Chairman of the School Board.
